🧴 Is there really cake inside? The true face of perfume notes!

Yes, we've all heard those famous notes:
“It opens with notes of whiskey…”
"There's a touch of cigar..."
"A sweet smell, like cake..."
But is there really cake inside? Or when making perfume, do we melt a cigar and put it in the bottle? Of course not! 😄
👃 The magical side of the fragrance world: molecules!
Perfumes contain molecules that represent the character of the materials themselves, rather than the materials themselves.
So, the aroma of "whiskey" is actually a resynthesis of specific aroma molecules found in whiskey, created under laboratory conditions.
Similarly, what we call the "pastry note" is usually created by sweet-tasting molecules such as vanillin , heliotropin , or coumarin .
🧪 Natural or synthetic?
Some ingredients come from nature — for example, limonene obtained from orange peel.
Some are so rare in nature that they are produced synthetically to create the same effect.
When used in the correct dosage, these synthetic molecules create a scent that is indistinguishable from the natural one.
But beware: the dosage matters!
⚖️ An example: “Skatole” (3-Methylindole)
Skatole is a molecule that occurs naturally in both jasmine flowers and… yes, in the human body .
When used in very small amounts, it gives off a jasmine-like, warm and elegant scent.
But if the ratio gets off... let's say it resembles something completely different than a flower 😅
This is where mastery in perfumery lies:
You use a molecule in such a balanced way that it creates the desired character without being offensive.
🧠 The true art of perfumery = Dosage, balance, and inspiration.
At Onreal Perfume, we generally use Extrait de Parfum concentration in our formulations — meaning it's more lasting, more intense, and has a more artistic touch.
This gives us the opportunity to create not just a scent, but a character .
Sometimes it's the texture of a cigar, sometimes the feel of fresh bread... but all are products of molecular art.
💬 In conclusion...
"If a scent smells like whiskey, it doesn't come from the whiskey itself, but from the spirit of the whiskey."
True perfumes are born at the intersection of science, art, and emotion.
A bit of lab work, a bit of passion… and lots of Onreal 🌿
